EMR/EHR Interactive Courseware

Oak Grove developed 17 interactive, web-based courses to introduce Adventist HealthCare staff to several core Cerner Millennium products including PowerChart®, AppBar®, SurgiNet®, and FirstNet®. The web-based training was part of a broader effort to train thousands of hospital staff members on the Cerner Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation.

CHALLENGE:

Our three main challenges on this project were: 1) aligning the web-based training with the instructor-led training that was being developed by another team; 2) creating engaging, interactive courseware on a software tool; and, 3) developing accurate training scenarios even as the software build was underway.

SOLUTION:

Learning a new software system can be overwhelming so we designed training that was highly contextual with multiple day-in-the-life examples to reinforce learning. We interviewed a variety of hospital staff to determine how they conducted their workdays. We also spent several weeks learning the Cerner system to both identify the new processes and to measure the impact the migration would have on the different roles and responsibilities. Each course included a guide to “walk” the learner through typical tasks and software demonstrations. In addition, we incorporated several “try-it” demonstrations in which the learner interacted directly with the software.
